AI in B2B Buying: What the 2026 Data Shows
The decision forms before first contact. According to 6sense (2025), business buyers have completed roughly 70 percent of their journey by the time they first contact a vendor; 94 percent of buying groups have already ranked favourites, and the favourite wins in 77 to 84 percent of cases. Gartner (2026) adds: 67 percent of B2B buyers prefer a buying process entirely without sales contact.
AI sits in the comparison phase. Per Forrester (2026), 94 percent of business buyers used AI in their most recent purchase; 55 percent compare vendors directly inside AI tools, and 47 percent have AI draft the internal justification document. At the same time TrustRadius (2026) shows: 94 percent of AI users at least sometimes verify the output against other sources. AI changed where research begins, not who is trusted at the end.
Industry is catching up, trust stays hybrid. Among technical buyers, the share who never use AI fell from 42 to 31 percent within a year (GlobalSpec/TREW, 2026). Meanwhile, roughly 45 percent of German B2B marketing budgets still go to trade fairs (AUMA). The practical consequence for suppliers: be present with machine-readable first-hand information in the invisible early phase, and keep the same substance ready as humanly verifiable proof (references, measurements, real images) for the closing phase.
