Brand canon, consistency and representation governance

BrandLockManage your brand's verified truth in a single system

BrandLock brings your organisation's official information, approved claims, terminology and representation rules together in a single brand canon. It audits the digital sources you own, measures deviations in the answers of AI systems within scope and manages the correction process.

What we do not do

We do not directly control the answers of external AI systems. We verify and align the sources your brand can control, and we plan the interventions that reduce the risk of misrepresentation.

The problem

If your brand's truth does not sit in one place, every channel produces its own interpretation.

AI systems and search platforms do not take the information about your brand from a single document. They assess your website, your product and service pages, structured data, corporate profiles, publications and the other sources they can reach as a whole.

When these sources contradict each other:

  1. 1Old prices or service scopes can be passed on as current information.
  2. 2Founding year, team, certification or expertise details can diverge.
  3. 3Unapproved claims can be read as official brand messaging.
  4. 4Products and services can be associated with the wrong categories.
  5. 5The same brand can be described in different forms in different languages.
  6. 6Visible content and structured data may not confirm each other.
  7. 7Sales, marketing, product and legal teams can work from different versions of the information.

BrandLock makes this fragmentation visible, defines the organisation's approved truth and links every inconsistency to a correction step with a named owner.

What is a brand canon?

A brand canon is the master record made up of an organisation's verified information, approved claims, preferred terminology and representation rules. It shows which information is valid, which source that information rests on, who approved it and when it will be reviewed again.

What it promises

BrandLock organises, verifies and aligns the information sources the brand can control. It measures inconsistencies in the defined sources and queries. It links every finding to an actionable correction plan.

What it does not promise

BrandLock does not directly control the answers of ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or other publicly available AI systems, and it does not guarantee a particular answer. In these systems the representation at the moment of measurement is examined; the canonical sources the brand owns are improved and the interventions that reduce the risk of misrepresentation are identified.

How it differs from a brand guideline

It turns the brand guideline into a living verification system.

A classic brand guideline explains how the logo, the colours and the corporate language are to be used. In addition to these, BrandLock manages the verifiable information about the organisation, the commercial claims, the evidence, the digital sources, the owners and the change history.

BrandLock answers four core questions:

Which information about the brand is approved?

What is the evidence, the owner and the validity date of that information?

Where do the digital sources contradict the approved information?

Which correction should be made, in which order and in which source?

How a finding looks

Every inconsistency is reported with the same five fields. The row below is a sample record prepared to show the format.

The sample record is not real customer data.
Source URL

/about

Wording on the site

Founded in 2015

Approved brand truth

Founding year is 2012

Risk level

High

Suggested correction

The text is corrected in line with the canon, and the foundingDate field in the Organization schema is set to the same value.

Source URL

/services and /pricing

Wording on the site

The two pages list a different scope for the same service

Approved brand truth

The service scope is defined in a single list

Risk level

Medium

Suggested correction

The scope list is tied to a single source in the canon, and the second page refers to it.

Source URL

/de/ueber-uns (German)

Wording on the site

A certification claim that does not appear on the English page

Approved brand truth

The certification list is limited to three items in the canon

Risk level

High

Suggested correction

The claim without evidence is removed, and the claim lists are aligned across the languages.

Service architecture

There are four separate scopes. Which one is needed is determined in the first call.

BrandLock Canon and Audit

This is the core service in which the brand's verified master record is created and the existing digital sources are examined against that record.

Scope

  • Assessment of existing brand documents and digital sources
  • Inventory of corporate information, products, services and claims
  • Source, owner and validity records
  • Preferred terminology and terminology that should not be used
  • Creation of the brand canon
  • Audit of the defined URLs and languages
  • Classification of inconsistencies together with their sources
  • Prioritised correction list
  • Management review
  • Re-check after correction

Core deliverables

  • Brand canon
  • Inventory of approved information and claims
  • Terminology and language rules
  • Inconsistency report including the source URL
  • Prioritised correction plan
  • PDF and, depending on the scope, machine readable data output
  • Result of the repeated audit

The BrandLock process

Seven steps. The output of each step is the input of the next.

1

We understand the business truth

We clarify together what you sell, which claims are defensible and which information is critical.

2

We gather the sources and the evidence

The website, corporate documents, certifications, contract terms and, where one exists, the current brand guideline are gathered in one place.

3

We build the brand canon

Approved information, claims, terminology and representation rules are recorded together with their source, their owner and their validity date.

4

We compare the digital sources

The defined URLs and languages are scanned against the canon; visible text and structured data are assessed together.

5

We classify the findings

Every inconsistency is listed and prioritised together with its source, its risk level and its suggested correction.

6

We implement and re-check

Where the authorisation and the scope exist, the corrections are implemented, then the same audit is repeated and the difference is reported.

7

We move to monitoring if needed

Periodic measurement is carried out on the engine, query and language sets defined in the agreement, and the results are verified by a person.

Why TYS

More than twenty years of digital experience. A disciplined practice for a new representation problem.

Brand consistency is not only a text or software problem. Visual communication, content, web architecture, search visibility, data structure and internal approval processes have to be handled together.

TYS combines the visual communication background it has built since 1996, the interactive projects and web work it has carried out since 2003, and the digital marketing and SEO experience it has developed since the 2010s within the same service architecture. The BrandLock approach was developed in 2024 by applying that background to the field of brand canon and representation in AI systems.

Strategy and brand knowledge

We clarify what the brand actually offers, which claims are defensible and which distinctions need to be preserved.

Experience with digital sources

We assess the relationship between websites, content structures, search systems and machine readable data layers as a whole.

Technical implementation

We do not only report inconsistencies. Where the authorisation and the scope exist, we develop applicable corrections for site texts, structured data and source architecture.

Human oversight

The canon is approved by authorised brand owners, not by AI systems. Technology speeds up the comparison and the follow up; the final decision on commercial truth stays with the organisation.

Multilingual work

We examine not only the translation, but also whether the same claim and the same service scope carry the same truth in different languages and markets.

Who it suits

BrandLock is particularly suitable for the following organisations

  • Companies operating in more than one language or country
  • Brands managing a large number of products, services or commercial claims
  • Businesses communicating through dealers, distributors or business partners
  • Companies whose price, scope or certification information changes regularly
  • Organisations going through a rebranding, a merger or a change of name
  • Teams with inconsistencies between the website and the sales materials
  • Companies running their own chatbot or a content system built on AI systems
  • Organisations that want to set up an approval process across the brand, marketing, legal and product teams

Which expectations it does not suit

  • Preparation of a logo or visual identity guideline only
  • Directly changing the answers of external AI systems
  • A guarantee of a particular ranking, visibility or answer
  • Acceptance of commercial claims as correct without evidence presented
  • Fully automatic publishing without an internal approval owner
  • Direct alteration of sources belonging to third parties where there is no access

Measurement approach

The success of BrandLock is not reduced to a single abstract score. Depending on the project, the following indicators can be used:

  • Completion status of the brand canon
  • Share of critical claims with a defined source and owner
  • Number of inconsistencies identified on the site
  • Share of inconsistencies corrected
  • Alignment between visible content and structured data
  • Consistency across languages and markets
  • How far the answers from AI systems within scope match the canon
  • Resolution status of misrepresentation findings

The indicators are compared with the situation recorded at the start of the project. No guarantee is given for ranking, visibility, customer acquisition or the answers of external AI systems.

Scope limits

  1. 1It cannot be guaranteed that external AI systems will use a particular wording.
  2. 2Answers from AI systems can change according to time, model, query, language and user context.
  3. 3Content on platforms belonging to third parties can be handled only within the framework of the relevant access and publishing policies.
  4. 4Assessing the compliance of legal, medical or financial claims is the responsibility of the relevant experts.
  5. 5The scope of technical implementation depends on the customer's existing infrastructure and on the access provided.
  6. 6Monitoring rests on controlled sampling carried out on predefined engine and query sets.
  7. 7Continuous monitoring, automatic alerts and advanced classification features are offered only where verified operational capacity and contractual scope exist.
