How do you build an analytics goal hierarchy for macro and micro conversions?

Author: Yılmaz Saraçmakro-donusummikro-donusumga4kpi-hiyerarsisi

Short answer: Build the hierarchy backwards from the business goal: a single macro conversion at the top, and below it a small set of micro conversions that measure the path toward it. In GA4, only macros are marked as key events; micros exist for segments, funnels, and diagnosis.

Setup steps

  • Define the macro: purchase in e-commerce, qualified form submission in B2B; keep the count deliberately small.
  • Map the path: which intermediate steps lead users to the macro; pricing page, calculator, form start, signup.
  • Model each step as a micro conversion event with a parameter standard.
  • Validate the micro-to-macro relationship regularly in funnel reports; a micro that cannot prove its link to the macro leaves the hierarchy.
  • For B2B, close the loop with the CRM: without lead quality feedback, the macro alone can mislead.

TYS Digital Performance anchors the goal hierarchy in a written measurement plan that records owner, definition, and test method for every event.
