How do I balance TOFU, MOFU and BOFU content across the customer journey?

Short answer: The balance is derived from your funnel's bottleneck, not from a fixed ratio. No traffic means weight on TOFU; traffic but no leads means MOFU; leads but no sales means BOFU.

A practical method for the balance

  • Build an inventory: label every existing piece as TOFU, MOFU or BOFU; on most sites the distribution piles up on one side
  • Find the bottleneck with data: the transition rates between stages show which layer is weak
  • Complete BOFU first: service, pricing, comparison and case pages are few in number but carry the conversion; without a destination, top of funnel traffic goes to waste
  • Chain the layers with internal links: every TOFU piece links to the matching MOFU asset, which links to the BOFU page

TYS Digital Performance starts planning with exactly this inventory and bottleneck analysis; the production calendar follows the weak layer, and transition rates are remeasured against a baseline at regular intervals. The balance is not a one-time setting but a decision that data keeps updating.
