GEO for Online Stores: Why ChatGPT Recommends Your Competitor and Not You
When users ask AI assistants about products, only brands that are machine-readable and authoritative are cited. We show how to appear in the answer sources.
The scenario
A potential customer asks ChatGPT: "Which German online stores for sustainable sportswear exist?" ChatGPT names three stores – not yours. Why?
Not because your store is worse. But because it is invisible to AI systems.
How AI systems form recommendations
Large language models (LLMs) are based on training data from the public web. Which brands are represented in this data largely determines whether they appear in answers.
Modern AI systems also use Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) for current information: they search the web in real time and cite pages that are clearly structured and unambiguous in content.
The four visibility levers for online stores
1. Brand presence via external sources (Off-Page GEO): AI systems trust sources that other reliable sources link to. Get mentions in trade media, maintain complete Google Business Profile, and ensure presence in industry directories.
2. Structured company data (On-Page GEO): Use Organization schema on your homepage with clear description, founding date, service area and offer catalog.
3. Consistent NAP data: AI systems downgrade contradictory sources. Ensure your name, address and phone number are identical across all platforms.
4. Product categories as topical authority: Shops that publish in-depth content about their product category (guides, comparisons, care instructions) are classified as topical authorities.
